Contemporary Mark Making: Blurring the Lines Between Drawing & Writing
December 12, 2009 through January 23, 2010
Reception: Saturday, January 9, 2010 3.00–5.00PM
Governed by millennia old conventions of symbolic meaning, writing and lettering can be viewed as drawings at a basic formal level. In this exhibit, artists’ mark making ranges from legible words and discernible images, to scratches and scribbles as well as to lyrical calligraphic forms. The marks are varied; light, dark, animated, organic or reserved and calculated, but they often merge and overlap the line, image and the text, thus Blurring the Line Between Drawing and Writing.
