I am a visual artist working in drawing and textile with an interest in systems, language and syntax as expressed in two and three dimensions. I am interested in how form takes shape and behavior yields form—whether working with charcoal on paper or fiber in hand and space.
My textiles are a material exploration. I use natural fibers chosen for their ecological footprint, their weight, drape, and tactile vocabulary, and color. Textile is is structural drawing. It is the realization of a continuous line moving through space, existing in a grid, and transforming a continuous line into an architectural form -- in the words of Anni Albers, a "pliable plane."
I am interested in function and utility. Drawings and textiles refer to one another.
I am a part time professor of drawing at Montclair State and NJIT.
I am the former owner/director of Gold Montclair (Gold/scopophilia*) , an aggressive contemporary art program representing critically vetted, undervalued artists with a curatorial emphasis on hand and often (but not always) textile. I care about material fluency; artists who speak fluently through their chosen materials and media. Gallery press includes reviews in Hyperallergic, Two Coats of Paint, AnteMag, ArtSpiel, and Hyperallergic Weekend.
I have been awarded fellowships at NYFA, AIR, Radius, and my work has been discussed in the New York Times, Brooklyn Rail and many books and periodicals.
